p:ear youth and programs featured in latest issue of Uncensored

The creation process
Both p:ear youth and its art program are featured in the latest issue of Uncensored, a magazine published by the Institute for Children, Poverty and Homelessness. The article "Creating Stability: Homeless children find confidence, trust and expression through arts programs," illustrates the work of several arts programs around the country that target homeless youth including Sanctuary up in Seattle. p:ear program director Pippa Arend spoke to Uncensored about the about the role the art program plays in the lives of p:ear youth:
“The art is great and important, but our real goal is for these kids to develop personal relationships with others, because from that place they can move forward and mature,” she says. “Art and recreation and education are just tools for our secret mission, which is to create trust and a sense of hope for these kids."

Recovery Panes Healing Arts Project opens November 4th

Recovery Panes Healing Arts Project, founded by Kelly Williams, has exposed the impact of addiction through the process of encaustics. The RACC granted project has allowed Williams to use art as a cathartic rhythm to explore personal experiences, hope, & triumph. As lives are created by moments and interactions, the panels represent the change of stories when rearranged differently. Come alter the panels and add your own touch to the stories with live music featuring p:ear youth, this 1st Thursday, November 4th. Kelly Williams is a local Portland artist, who has transformed encaustic paintings into a flowing rhythm of life. Every line and gesture has been transcribed by emotion packed experiences and fleeting filled notions. Williams also holds encaustic workshops dedicated to exploring one’s own inner chaos through the layers wax. To learn more:www.recoverypanes.blogspot.com and www.kellywilliams.blogspot.com

Stakes is High

Stakes is High features the work of Roscoe Hall II with p:ear youth artists. His powerful imagery isolates the subject at hand while giving dominance to negative space, as if asking the viewer to question what is more important. Subtle details and incongruous lines create steady visual beats and rhythms, letting your eyes flow with movement following the paths of his story. Through thick and thin, harsh versus soft, loud to quiet, Hall, makes statements of lives and questions of life. DJ Non-Profit will be laying down tracks, giving a pulse to the night with great tempos and homegrown vibes. Join us this First Thursday for food, music, and art!
