p:ear youth featured in OPB story on homeless students

One of p:ear's transition students was featured in a recent Oregon Public Broadcasting story on homeless students and the challenges they face in pursuing an education. Despite all the obstacles, Kyle still finds inspiration to go school:
“Teachers have affected my life more than anyone throughout my entire life. Specifically my English teachers because it’s always been my best class. They’ve been the biggest supports that I’ve had. I’ve had English teachers take me to their house for the holidays. I’ve had English teachers over the summer invite me over.”
Teachers and mentors DO make a difference. Support p:ear's education and transition programs with a gift this holiday through theWillamette Week Give!Guide.

Portraits of Strength

p:ear was fortunate enough to again work with photographer Charles Gullung for a portrait series. p:ear youth were asked to choose an object that gives them strength for their portrait, and the result is a deeply moving look at simple but sustaining objects that push us through the day and give us our humanity. Every thing from a cup of coffee to a photo of one's child show how the simple and complex help life keep moving. Charles' profound series gives a glimpse into the lives of p:ear youth. Enjoy!

p:ear youth need your help during holiday!

p:ear is looking for local partners for our annual holiday Giving Tree.

Every winter, our youth are looking for basic needs such as socks, backpacks, bus tickets, gift cards, art supplies and other items that are around $25. The Giving Tree helps us supply our youth with the things they need throughout the year.

How you can help

p:ear youth hand-decorate ornaments for display at your business, school, or church. Employees, students, people from your congregation select an item to purchase and donate to p:ear. Collect all the items and bring to p:ear before p:ear's Christmas Brunch on December 25th. No wrapping required!

Your gifts make a difference

Last year, the Giving Tree brought in nearly $5,400 of gifts. Youth are able to use bus tickets to get to and from work, backpacks for carrying school books and art supplies, and socks and ponchos to stay warm and dry. A HUGE thank you to our 2010 participants: Portland Center Stage, Bridgeport United Church of Christ, OHSU, Floating World Comics, Anka Gallery, TwentyFourSeven, Cupcake Jones and Arabella Salon.

p:ear donors go above and beyond

It's the end of the holidays - finally! - and we're finishing up all the odds and ends from a long but really wonderful season. While we're excited to start off the new year with fresh art supplies, blank canvases and sharpened pencils, we're even more excited that so many new people chose p:ear for their holiday giving. Over a third of holiday gifts were from new donors! So thanks to you, yes, YOU, who found p:ear and gave gifts that made this season special for our youth.

We'd love to meet some of our new donors and hope to see you at our new First Thursday art opening in February.
With much thanks,
p:ear staff and youth

Santa wants you to rock out! Another Gray Christmas donates proceeds to p:ear

There's only so many times you can listen "Frosty the Snowman" before you want to take an ice pick and hack old Frosty into snowballs. Thankfully the Willamette Week has put together a holiday compilation of Portland bands signing anything and everything but Frosty. The cd is only $5 with proceeds going to p:ear.

Feeling more Scrooge than Santa? You can preview the music or check the freerelease party and performances at Mississippi Studios this Wednesday, 12/22. Thanks to Casey Jarman and the Willamette Week for being awesome and helping us rock out this holiday season!

And you can always donate to p:ear through the Willamette Week's Give!Guide, too.

Giving Tree Drop-off Monday, 12/20

I realized yesterday that I've been so busy that I've forgotten to open the past ten days of my Advent calendar (which is good because that means I'm not eating the chocolate inside the calendar, which is the real reason I buy it). Time flies during the holidays, but our Giving Tree partners have been busy distributing our p:ear ornaments and we can't thank them enough!

So if you did take an ornament, the drop-off date for gifts is this Monday, December 20th. We'll be here from 8:30 am until 4 pm. Stop by, get a cup of espresso at the p:ear barista school, check out the Recovery Panes instillation at the gallery and say hello. We really appreciate all who have helped out to make this holiday special for our kids.

Cha donates 10% of December proceeds to p:ear

We love good Mexican food and so we're super excited that Cha is donating 10% of all their December dinner proceeds to p:ear (though we don't really need the excuse to try their Winter Mojito with the Enchiladas De Rajas Poblanas).
